Recently, I spent time researching in the feminist studies section of the Love Library at the University of Nebraska. Their collection is incredible and includes original editions of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s publication The ForeRunner from as far back as 1909. The collection also includes dozens of original copies of Equal Rights, the National Woman’s Party publication that advocated for transnational feminism in the interwar years as well as the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. Interestingly, I noticed the copies of Equal Rights held by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were all donated in 1964. My assumption is they came from the estate of Doris Stevens who was from Nebraska and died in 1963.
The WAPUSH proposal has benefitted enormously from these documents and you can see our updated version at this link. If you have any information about how these incredible documents ended up at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, please reach out to Serene Williams at serene@teachwapush.org as we would like to put this story into the textbook we are writing for the WAPUSH course.
